Primary Years at West Coast Steiner School

Class 6 student at West Coast Steiner School

"Whereas postmodern schools are struggling to develop integrated curricula,…Waldorf teachers have always taught math, science, literature, and the arts as part of an organized whole."

- David Elkind -
author of "The Hurried Child," "All Grown Up", "No Place to Go," "Miseducation" and others

“No wonder our curriculum is so good. We have been refining it for over 85 years.”

The West Coast Steiner School offers a rich and comprehensive academic program. Art, poetry, music, movement and drama are integrated into the curriculum at every point of study to enhance the students' understanding of the subject matter.

Each day begins with a verse and physical movement to awaken all the senses. Academic subjects (including Language Arts, Math, Science, Literature and History) are then taught in a two-hour "main lesson" block in the morning. After Main Lesson, a range of other subjects are taught, including music, form drawing, painting, modeling, games and movement.

Also specialist teachers provide lessons in musical instruments, German, Handwork, Woodwork and Eurythmy. As children's capacities change through the years, the curriculum responds accordingly.
